Term 6
Come Outside!
Term 6 Week 1 What the Ladybird Heard
We have been reading What the Ladybird Heard by Julia Donaldson. To retell the story we used stick puppets in our puppet theatre. This term's topic is 'Come Outside! So, we have been thinking of different activities we do outside, and this week we were camping. We enjoyed getting our tents ready and making a campfire to toast our cotton wool marshmallows on.
To continue to develop our fine motor skills, we used playdough to create our own ladybirds. To copy the trail of the ladybird flying to each animal to whisper her plan, we used ribbons wands and chalk marking.
Term 6 Week 2 What the Ladybird Heard at the Seaside
This week we have been reading the story of What The Ladybird Heard at the Seaside. Hefty Hugh and Lanky Len are up to their old tricks, but luckily the Ladybird has a plan to stop them.
On the theme of the seaside the children have been using shells to make prints into playdough.
There were buckets and spades to make sandcastles in the sandpit. We had our Barn Owl's version of the sea to paddle in and swim across!
We have been using 2D shapes to make patterns and pictures. You can see the mermaid from the story made of shapes. Children used the water syringes to make the boats move from one water tray to another along the guttering. The sunshine has helped with our theme of being at the seaside!
Term 6 Week 3 Sharing a Shell
This week our story was 'Sharing a Shell' by Julia Donaldson. The three friends, crab, anemone and bristleworm have to work together and get along when they need to find new home. We have created an underwater scene and painted shells to make sea creatures. The Barn Owls have also been practising their fishing skills by catching the magnetic fish. The sand pit has been very busy this week in the sunshine and just like the characters in the story, the Barn Owls have all got along.
We have cooled down by dipping our feet in a tray of water, being sprayed by the hosepipe and on Friday afternoon we enjoyed an ice lolly!
Term 6 Week 4 Going to School
This week we have been thinking about moving on to our new roles, whether that is on to a reception class, or becoming the older Barn Owls in the class. Our home corner has become a bedroom, with a desk and school uniform to try on. The children have enjoyed dressing up.
We have also been practising our writing of numbers and letters. The children have been exploring the school grounds and making their own school out of blocks.
The Teddy Bears Picnic trip to SCEEC
We had a wonderful day out on our annual trip to SCEEC for the Teddy Bear's picnic. The Barn Owls were all very well behaved and engaged with the tasks. They had to make a shelter for their bears. Then we went into the woods to find water and food for the bears. The children worked together and learnt why we have to look after our environment and how we can have an impact on the world.
They was lots of fun and giggling as the children put on their bear ears and the adults became the trees. They had to dance around and when the music stopped, to find a tree to shelter under, but some of the trees were cut down!
There was the Willow tree wishing walk way and the outdoor musical instruments to explore too. One of the highlights as always, was the ride on the minibus, and we are very grateful to Mr Greenough for giving up his time to collect the bus and be our chauffeur for the day!
Term 6 Week 5 The Colour Monster Goes to School
This week we have been reading The Colour Monster Goes to School by Anna Llanas. The children have been creating their own colour monster associated with different emotions, some out of play dough and others have made collages.
Term 6 Week 6 Real Superheroes
This week we have been thinking about real life superheroes we have meet. Our Wendy House has become a police station and the children have even made their own blue sirens to go on top of our Little Tyke cars! There were also the firefighters on the fire engine that we made from tyres and equipment in our garden. Inside the home corner has been the doctor's surgery with very helpful receptionists and efficient doctors and nurses. The children have made thank you cards to give to people they think are everyday superheroes.
The transition morning went very well and the children going up to Robins enjoyed meeting their new friends. The Barn Owls who are staying were very excited about becoming the 'big' Barn Owls!
Term 6 Week 7 People Who Help Us
This week we have continued to think about everyday superheroes and their special powers. We have been reading the book A Superhero Like You by Dr Ranj, and talking about the power of kindness, problem solving, helping, and being a good friend. We made our own superhero masks.
This week we have also been getting ready to move on to our new roles, as reception children, or the older Barn Owls in the class.
We also enjoyed our sports races where we worked in teams and cheered each other on. We had to balance a bean bag on our head, then we had to wear a fancy hat and put some water in our tea cup to carry to the end without spilling it! There was lots of fun!
