Term 5

Term 5 - Towers, Tunnels and Turrets

Well it might be a short term but it's an exciting one! Term 5 starts with us learning about when and why castles were builts. We will be labelling the key features and their purposesand use non-fiction texts to find out more. The topic will encompass us researching famous towers of the world, what tunnels are used for, both human and animal and finding out about the famous Engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

In English we will be reminding the children of the joys of Traditional Tales. We will be exploring how they use repetitive language, similar character traits and plots and work towards writing our own part of a traditional tale named 'The four little pigs'. Following this we will use the text 'The Tunnel' By Anthony Browne to create an alternative ending  adventure story and use all our knowledge of castles to write a non-fiction text about the parts of a castle.

Art and DT will involve developing the skills and techniques to create a fortress for the little pigs using a set criteria. There will be a lot of problem solving and a lot of fun! But the fun doesn't finish at the end of Term 5 as we wll be going on our trip to Warwick Castle at the beginning of Term 6, this is very exciting and provide the children with the opportunity to see their learning come alive.

Our Castle Design and Make Day!

Tuesday 17th May was an exciting day in Kingfisher's class. We were set the challenge of making a castle which was strong enough to keep the Three little pigs safe. We had to work hard to include 4 key features: At least 1 tower, a drawbridge, crenellations and arrow slits. We started by designing it on paper and then started teh making using a lot of skills to cut and join. We completeted our project with finishing touches like painting and brickwork patterns which we'd learned about the previous week in art.

Kingfishers enjoyed a treat on Friday 6th May. They were the class who raised the most money at the KS2 production cake sale so were invited by Mrs Potter to a short session in Forest School. They enjoyed a play and toasted marshmallows - Thank you Mrs Potter!
