Term 1

Term 1

Kingfishers have made a super start to the year! In English we started the term learning about labels and captions. Then, we moved on to read the story of 'Pirate George', which we had a go at retelling before writing our own amazing pirate stories! In Maths we have been learning about place value. In Science we have been learning about what humans need to survive, the different food groups and floating and sinking.

Our Topic this term has been 'Land Ahoy'. We have learnt about the 4 countries that make up the UK and surrounding seas, Captain James Cook, Grace Darling, the RNLI and we had a go at making our own lighthouses from clay. We also enjoyed making sea creatures out of everyday materials and building and testing our own rafts.

To end the term we had a 'Pirate Day' which the children thoroughly enjoyed!

We have been using base 10 equipment to support us in Maths this term.

Science

26th September - Kingfishers have been learning all about which materials will float and sink.  They had fun testing out different materials and designing and making a boat.  We all learnt lots during the experiment, here are some of our observations:

"The cardboard is sinking because it's absorbing the water"

"Mine is plastic, it is floating"

"The cardboard will sink by the morning".

Great work Kingfishers !

To start our Science lessons off this term Kingfishers learnt that humans need air, water, food, clothes and shelter to survive.  They had fun sorting different items into 'wants' and 'needs'.  Kingfishers agreed toys and sweets aren't essential to our survival but rather are things they want and enjoy.
