Term 1

Here's what we've been up to...

Superhero Day!

To celebrate the end of the term and our topic, 'Superhero Me!', Kestrels and Kingfishers had a Superhero Day. We all dressed up as different superheroes and started our day by doing a catwalk to introduce ourselves. We then used our DT skills to make our superhero vehicles that we had designed prior. In the afternoon we had a set of different challenges including a superhero training obstacle course, creating your own superhero craft and designing a meal for a superhero using what we've learnt in Science this term. We had to remember that superheroes need to have energy and be strong, so we thought carefully about which foods to include from the different food groups. Well done Kestrels for a brilliant first term!

We have all enjoyed getting stuck in with our first topic, 'Superhero Me'. Our focus text has been Supertato which Kestrels really enjoyed! We came up with adjectives, describing words, to label characters and then do the same to our own super vegetable! Later in the week we had a visit from 'Evil Pea' who caused chaos in our classroom. Our week ended by creating wanted posters to try and catch him! In Maths we are continuing to focus on numbers to 10 and place value. In our topic we designed and made superhero masks. We had a think about the shape, design and colours we wanted to use. We have also started looking at our every day superheroes, focusing on people who help us, such as nurses, doctors, police etc. A superhero from the past that we looked at was Florence Nightingale. We learnt about how she helped others and changed hospitals for the better.

Wow, what a brilliant, busy first week. A big well done to all of the Kestrels. Miss Gibbons and Mrs Hawkins have been very impressed with how everyone has settled into Year 1 with the new routines. This week we have spent time getting to know each other and our classroom. We started some Maths where we have been learning to sort objects. We learnt we could sort objects in different ways, for example, by colour, size, shape and object type. We also had an introduction to our topic for this term, 'Superhero Me'. See you on Monday ready for another week of fun!
