Phonics

Phonics in Robins

As a school we use the phonics programme 'Phonics International' to teach letter sounds. The above image shows the order of sounds that we follow for our class teaching. In reception we aim to cover units 1 to 3 and the beginning of unit 4. We teach 4 sounds a week (Monday to Thursday). For each sound there is a sound action which your child will be able to share with you at home. We encourage the children to use the sound action when saying the sound.

Watch the video below to see the correct way to pronounce each sound

A useful video clip showing the correct 'pure' pronounciation of phonemes (units of sound).

Tricky words

A ‘tricky’ word is one that cannot be sounded out. They are words that are non-phonetic. If you sound them out and then try to blend the sounds, you will get a word that does not sound right. They are words that must be recognised by sight. We use tricky word street to help us remember our tricky words. We house tricky words that sound the same together.

Tricky words song

We also listen to our tricky word song. You can sing along to this at home too!
