Term 4

Roots, Shoots and Muddy Boots!

During our first week back we have been learning what a seed needs to grow. We made our own plant pots, then planted a sunflower seed in it and we will wait, water and watch it grow!

We have been making repeating patterns from a variety of objects in the classroom, from unifix cubes, building blocks and chalks. We also used the musical instruments to make patterns too.

The rain on Wednesday did not stop us from going outside and enjoying splashing in the puddles.

We have been enjoying activities linked to the school  book for Book Week, 'I am Every Good Thing' by Derrick Barnes. We drew and described what our talents are. We have been authors and illustrators of our own storybooks. The Wendy House became a cosy reading den where we have been sharing stories.

On Shrove Tuesday we learnt why we make pancakes. We worked in small groups to measure the ingredients and enjoyed eating them together! Outside using pretend pancakes we had races, balancing them on rackets.

This week is National science week with the theme of 'Adapt and Change'. We went to Forest School with Mrs Aito looking for signs of the season changing into Spring. We also drank hot chocolate and melted marshmallows on the fire! In class we created our own creatures thinking about where they would live, how they would move and what they ate, making adaptions to their environment.

We have been reading The Enormous Turnip. We have acted out the story and made sure we were in the right sequence to help pull the turnip out of the ground. In the water tray we made turnip soup with real vegetables. This week we have started using the 'snack shop', where children take it in turn to be the shopkeeper and the pieces of fruit have a price. The children have to give the right amount of counters to get their snack. There has been great turn taking and counting.

Outside this week there has been lots of problem solving too, using the guttering, stands, balls, water and ducks to move from one place to another!

This week we have been reading the story of Jasper's Beanstalk by Nick Butterworth. Jasper wants his bean seed to grow in a week! When it does not grow that quickly, he digs the seed up and throws it out the window.

Then a beanstalk does eventually grow.

We have planted our own bean seeds, but this time in a bag with a wet paper towel and not in a plant pot with soil. We are waiting to see what happens...

We also read the story of Jack and the Beanstalk, and thought about what we might find at the top of the beanstalk. The Barn Owls drew wonderful pictures of princesses, superheroes and their family at the top of the beanstalk. The beanstalk on our class display has been growing and you can see our heights measured on it.

There was lots of fun in the garden this week as we used different gardening tools and watering cans, just like Jasper in the story.

In maths we have been comparing  and exploring with weights and scales.

Term 4 Week 5 The Easter Story

This week we have been learning about the Easter story and how Christians celebrate Easter. We have acted out the story ourselves and also used puppets to retell the story.

Term 4 week 6 We are Going on an Egg Hunt

This week we have been reading the story, We're Going on an Egg Hunt, by Laura Hughes. The Barn Owls have been creating their own egg hunts in the garden. They have been counting and making patterns with eggs too. There have been lots of creative activities this week, finger printing egg shapes to go on our Easter cards, an Easter decoration and making chocolate nests. On Monday Reverend Helen came to talk to the Barn Owls and Robins about Easter and why it is a special celebration for Christians.
We hope you all have a relaxing and enjoyable Easter holiday.
